GRETA Researchers Achieve 7.2-Metre Read Range with Sustainable Graphene-Based RFID Tags
Researchers from FTN, Serbia and AlmaScience, Portugal have successfully fabricated and tested long read range graphene‑sheet based antennas and passive UHF (860-960 MHz) RFID tags on different paper substrates.
The developed tags achieved an impressive maximum read range of up to 7.2 meters in an indoor environment, outperforming previously reported graphene‑sheet based tags on paper substrates.
This breakthrough marks an important milestone in sustainable and circular electronics. By replacing traditional metal conductors and polymeric substrates, such as copper, aluminum, silver, and polyimide, for antenna fabrication with highly conductive carbon-based materials (i.e., graphene sheet) on biodegradable substrates, the GRETA partners have successfully demonstrated that carbon‑based material can deliver high performance for future low‑power and sustainable wireless applications, such as logistics tracking and inventory management, where a read range above 3 meters is essential.
The work has recently been published in the Sustainability Science and Technology journal as part of the Focus Issue on Sustainable and Circular Electronics.
